So, I will admit it – if I had the choice I would fly Business Class (or heavenly First class – imagine that!) everytime – but this is just not possible…. However, I have done some research and come up with some Top tips to make your economy class feel like business class!
So what is it about business/first class that has us all turn into the green-eyed monster? Those huge comfy seats? The posh toiletries? Proper food and the five-star service? Maybe even an on-board shower? Wouldn’t it be nice to turn left instead of right as you board your flight?
However, all is not lost… According to Skyscanner.com.au you too can be pampered – you just have to do a bit of preparation in advance… My source? 10 ways to make economy feel like first class (well, kind of!). As normal, I have added in my little comments too….
1. Go DIY gourmet with duty free treats
If plane food has never impressed you, then why not take the time to purchase some luxury chocolates or snacks in the duty free section (or even at your local shop) to take with you on the plane? These little treats can make all the difference, especially while having a midair toast with your favourite tipple (you’ll have to get that from cabin service — you’re not allowed to drink your duty free purchases on the plane). For those of us that enjoy our own favourite teas (ok, mine is Twinings Earl Grey, but don’t mind a bit of Bistrotea Lemongrass Green Tea – you can buy it online), and some biscuits/crackers or two. Sure, we often do it for young children, but why should you miss out on your favourites – particularly on a long flight?
2. Take a good travel pillow
A top quality travel pillow can make all the difference when it comes to sleeping well and avoiding neck ache. Ditch the free cushions that you get on long-haul flights; these are flat, thin and slip behind your head as soon as you fall asleep. Don’t go for anything big and bulky that’s shaped like a normal pillow either. Instead, invest in an inflatable pillow — it’ll save room in your hand luggage bag, give good neck support and prevent your head from falling to the side when you sleep. This is a great investment and you will never regret having a good travel pillow on hand!
3. Buy an inflatable foot rest
Having your feet slightly raised on a flight not only aids circulation, but it can reduce the risk of swelling and joint pain too. This is a comfort-boosting option that is often overlooked, and it won’t take up much space when deflated either. Must admit – I hadn’t thought of these… Will be running out to invest in an inflatable foot rest soon for my next trip!
4. Choose your seat wisely before you board the flight
Aim for a window seat to ensure you don’t have a frequent toilet visitor scrambling over you every five minutes (or snag an aisle if you’re that frequent toilet visitor). Also, don’t immediately assume an exit row is best. Yes, these seats have extra leg room, but often they don’t recline. So instead, consider the row behind the exit row where you won’t have someone reclining in front of you. OK, so this is sometimes hard to arrange, but read my recent article on How to get more Space on a Flight for some extra tips!
5. Pack some toiletries to pamper yourself on the plane
There are so many lotions and potions that you can bring on the flight with you to make your trip more comfortable. Try some face spritz, under-eye gel, tired eye drops, moisturiser, lip-balm, face wipes and a toothbrush and toothpaste. Stay hydrated as well as keeping your skin moisturised and you’re all set for a comfortable flight. Remember though – don’t go for the heavily scented ones – you will soon get tired of the sweet sickly smell of the strawberry lipsmacker! I love the Body Shop Travel Products – great value and an organisation that is respectful of the environment (and socially responsible).
6. Bring some good noise-cancelling headphones and ear plugs
Whether it’s a crying baby, a chatty neighbour or the noise of the engine, loud noises can ruin the chances of a relaxing flight, so make sure that you’re fully prepared. Bring some noise-cancelling headphones and listen to some relaxing music, or if you want complete silence, buy some good quality ear plugs. I so agree with this one. Many a time my trip has been saved due to my ability to just tune out and relax! We recommend the Bose ones – sure they are more expensive, but you might be able to get them a bit cheaper duty free – and again a great investment.
7. Also grab some thick socks (or even slipper-socks) to walk around the plane
Sometimes airlines provide free socks but they’re often thin and flimsy. Bring some of your own thick socks so you can comfortably walk around the plane. The ones with the grip on the bottom are even better. Such a great idea – and a perfect gift idea for Mother’s Day/Birthday/Christmas. Add this to your “gift ideas list” and you will forever have comfortable feet on your flight.
8. Look around for any empty seats and see if you can move
Always be on the lookout for free seats — sometimes whole rows are empty and let’s face it, three seats are better than one. You will be able to lift up the arm rest and potentially lie down across a full row. So keep your eyes open and ask if you can move. This is a bit like a stealth mission… Are you watching? See what is possible and make the quick move just after the doors are shut… Its worth it!
9. Bring a good sleeping mask
Sleeping masks are great for blocking out ambient light and letting you have a good rest. Invest in a slightly pricier one that sits away from your eyes and has eye cavities built into the mask. This will mean that rather than pushing on your eyelids, your eyes will be unobstructed during the REM (rapid eye movement) stage of sleep, so you’ll sleep more deeply. Again, another great stocking filler idea for your loved ones to get you and perfect for all travel.
10. Bring your own blanket
Flights can be chilly and blankets aren’t always provided, or can be very thin. Bring your own soft cashmere lightweight blanket/pashmina so you can snuggle up and dream away. SShhh.. Don’t tell anyone… I have just invested in the most dreamy Donna Hay Wool and Cashmere Throw and I am not regretting it! For a cheaper option, I have also had my eye on the Florence Broadhurst Faux Cashmere Silver Throw (from Sydney store Peters of Kensington) as a back up…. Still tempted…
