With careful planning, a bridal couple will have a fabulous wedding day surrounded by their wonderful friends and family, but how do you ensure that all your guests have the same experience?
Based on our own experiences and with some searching around chatting to others, we have come up with some fun ways to keep your guests engaged on your wedding day so that it is a day to remember for everyone!
Between the ceremony and the reception
Particularly good for destination weddings or where the reception and ceremony are in the same place, there is a lot to be said for fun outdoor games and activities to keep all guests amused! We have seen weddings where they have incorporated croquet, quoits and other fun lawn games to while away the time between the ceremony and reception.
For the more adventurous, jumping castles have also been a hit and can provide a plethora of fun photo opportunities.
At the table
There are a couple of ways to encourage everyone to chat. Think about a fun table trivia challenge (about the couple is a great one), or maybe a “table selfie” challenge to get everyone talking (and you will get some great photos to boot!). Set up your own wedding instagram where people can view the photos as they happen. A photo booth is another great option and the fun props can create some fabulous images of all your guests.
The odd table
There is always one table where there are guests which do not really know each other. Brief a couple of your other guests to help by introducing themselves and place tables together of people who do know each other. It is hard when you may be a guest who does not know many others but if there are greeters and minglers who will help introduce your guests to each other, this is a great way for conversation and fun to flow.
Its time to party!
Getting all the reception formalities out of the way early is a great way to create a party atmosphere. This then allows your band/DJ to create a great party atmosphere with few interruptions. However, if your crowd is not the partying sort, space out your formalities a little to give them something to look forward to.
Rocking it to the beat
A great DJ/band and music selection which covers a range of genres is a great way to get your guests up on the dance floor. One of our family traditions is (sadly!) the Chicken Dance and there is nothing more engaging than seeing your 90 year old Grandma rocking it on the floor with her grandchildren (and great grandchildren). Start your own family tradition with the nae nae dance (?) or something equally inclusive.
Think about organising a bus for your guests, particularly where there is distance between where guests are coming from and the ceremony and/or reception. This is a great way to get people chatting and can be a great icebreaker if there are some fun photos or video on the screen or some music to get the party started. Also can ensure guests get home safely (whether it be back to their home or overnight stay).
Its all about the food
This is not just about catering for a range of special meals and/or diets but ensuring that there is enough food for the whole evening. We have seen some great ideas where at the end of the reception there is a food van or even just takeaway boxes for guests for their trip home. Long gone are the days when the sliver of wedding cake was your take away! Make it fun and inventive and your guests will have a ball.
