Following on from the amazing success (and many hits) of our post on Lisa’s top things to do in Kingscliff NSW, we thought we would ask another local (real estate agent and contact for the new Miramar Casuarina Estate) Peter Brussel – to take us through Pete’s top things to do in Kingscliff NSW. Now Pete is a bit of an action man and loves the outdoors. Luckily, there are many activities here that are his favourites – both active and not so – so the possibilities for you are endless (let your imagination run wild!).
Cudgen Creek is a small coastal tidal creek on the Tweed Coast in far north New South Wales. The creek originates in Cudgen Lake at the edge of Bogangar township, and flows into the sea at Kingscliff. Access to the lake can be from the northern edge of Bogangar off the Coast Road into Tamarind Avenue, then Willow Avenue to Cudgen Lake Nature Reserve.
The lake is shallow and brackish, about 162 hectares in size and surrounded by paperbark forest swamp. To the south lies Round Mountain, with a distant Mount Warning to the south-west. No powered craft are permitted on the lake. Cudgen Creek is found at the northern end of the lake, in the far eastern corner. Given the soft mud, paddle times should coincide with high tide. The tide flows quite strongly, and it is highly recommended that you do not choose to paddle against it. The Old Bogangar Road bridge is four kilometres downstream. The southern part is in paperbark and Casuarina tree swamp, and approaching the bridge the swamp vegetation changes to some more salt resistant species. Some sections are lined with large ferns and white lillies. Flood debris in the trees shows that at times the entire area is under water. It is possible to put in and take out at that bridge, on the right eastern side.
It is a great way to see the local fauna and flora and a perfect way to spend a relaxing day out on the water.
The Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre (HPC) is the world’s first facility dedicated to the development of elite surfers and coaches.
The two level centre of excellence features state of the art education facilities, surf specific gym, auditorium, offices, testing and treatment room, accommodation for 22 and has been designed in consultation with the Australian Sports Commission and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).
The HPC is not just for elite surfers – it is for any surfer who wants to dramatically boost their ability level. This could mean you! Imagine yourself surfing the local breaks (Kingscliff Beach, Salt Beach and Cabarita Beach all have surf clubs) or just watching those elite surfers having a go.
Head for the Hills – Wollumbin National Park
For the nature lovers amongst us, think about Wollumbin, which dramatically rises from World Heritage-listed Wollumbin National Park – formerly known as Mount Warning National Park – to a height of 1,157m above sea level, and which is a remnant central vent of an ancient volcano. This spectacular feature can be viewed from a range of vantage points in the surrounding massive crater (caldera), including Cudgen Nature Reserve, Border Ranges National Park and Nightcap National Park, Cape Byron lighthouse and various settlements.
Explore this exquisite Gondwana Rainforest of Australia – rich in plant, bird and animal life – by taking a short walk on Lyrebird track. Hike this winding path under towering palms listening out for the calls of whipbirds, noisy pitta and, of course, lyrebirds. Enjoy a picnic beside Breakfast Creek or at Korrumbyn picnic area. Map: view a printable park map (PDF, 739 KB) for an overview of access and facilities.
Alternatively, there are a number of other national parks and visitor places to go – click here for the Visitor Guide – NSW National Parks.
Built up a thirst? Wine tasting is available too
Pete agrees with Lisa that one of the best wine stores in Australia is located right on our doorstep! However, Pete also thinks there is more than one!
Emmanuels wine shop on Marine Parade is Pete’s first port of call for their wine tasting on a Friday night between 5-7pm. However, if you are coming in to stay in the Northern Rivers area on a Saturday morning, you don’t miss out either! The Cellarbrations TapHouse at the Woolworths Shopping Centre (Pearl Street) has the same sommelier doing tastings on Saturday nights from 3-6pm. What is impressive is that both stores have an extensive selection of wines available and 4-5 wines are tasted at each session. Not to be missed!
First class food to round out your full day of activities
Pete is another local who agrees that the Mockingbird Cafe is a great spot for your evening meal. Armed with wine from either Emmanuel’s or the Cellarbrations Taphouse, the Mockingbird Cafe has a great menu that is perfect for that relaxing night out with friends.
However, Pete also has some other suggestions too! Babalou Restaurant at the Kingscliff Hotel (on Marine Parade) has a fantastic menu in their upstairs restaurant but also have a great bar menu available. Their big breakfast looks amazing (with all the trimmings) and they have a happy hour from 4-6pm everyday. Combine this with the new book club and their expanding functions service (including weddings) Babalou is one popular local hangout!
You haven’t finished yet? Well neither have we!
Marty’s at Caba has a reputation for its great food and beyond friendly service. Open from 4pm- late Tuesdays – Sundays (+ Sunday lunch), Marty’s is well known for their live music nights – with an open mike night every Tuesday and regular bands and performers on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. With many awards (and nominations) Marty’s has a range of menus – every thing from finger foods, tapas and pizzas to main meals. You’ll find lots of locals at Marty’s – a great spot to go for a fun night out.
Well, there is plenty to do in Kingscliff (we have only touched the surface!) so is now the time to imagine yourself enjoying any of the above activities? If so, contact us and we’d be happy to make your dream a reality!
