Modern Wedding Ceremony Traditions

Modern Wedding Ceremony Traditions

Wedding celebrations are becoming less formal as brides and grooms make important decisions about tailoring their day to fit their personalities through using modern wedding ceremony traditions.  There are many wonderful new traditions which can personalise your day to make it fit with who you are as both individuals and as a couple and here are some great suggestions for you!

Inspired by the article “20 Wedding Ceremony Traditions you can skip” here is our suggestions on how you can modernise and personalise your wedding ceremony.

Not so much matchy-matchy

Many brides are now opting to let their attendants choose their own dresses and/or accessories for the big day.  For a wedding on a budget, this can be a great way to be considerate to your special people.

Veiled inspiration

Once a must for a bride, many are now choosing short or no veils for their wedding day.  Quirk it up with a special hair accessory, flowers or hat, but certainly choose something that suits you and your dress.

Bouquet boldness

Like the dresses, no two bouquets need be the same and this is a way to use a variety of beautiful flowers to express the individuality of your bridal party.

Be bold with accessories

Less small pearl earings (and necklace) and more bold statement piece is a way to ensure your look truly reflects your personality.  Not that there is anything wrong with pearls (love them actually!) but maybe a few more strands and twists can brighten your ensemble.

Altar

Is a couple of surfboards more your style?  Floating muslin curtains your thing?  What about a floral arch littered with beautiful lights.  Lighting inspiration is becoming more and more popular and locals such as Elyssium Blooms and Lighting are great to talk to about what you can do to make your altar shine.

Make it personal

The pouring coloured sands can still be a popular choice, but you could “spice it up” by choosing spices instead.  Memories table celebrating missing loved ones is another option as is personalised unity candles or a wine box (lock up a box with wine and love letters and open on a predetermined date in the future).

All girl bridesmaids, all male groomsmen?

Many couples are now turning this tradition on their head and inviting their male bestie to be “Man of Honour” and female bestie to be “Best Woman”.  This is a great way to celebrate and recognise those closest to you.

All white

A wedding dress doesn’t have to be all white.  In fact one of the prettiest dresses I saw recently was a Japanese inspired embroidered floral dress which fully suited the bride’s personality.  A bold choice, but stunning..

All about the bass

Traditionally, Wagner’s Bridal Chorus has been the choice of brides to walk down the aisle, but maybe a Caribbean steel drum band is more your style for your beach wedding?  Match your music to your occasion and have fun with it.  A great idea I have seen recently is local Benjamin Carlyle is an accomplished musician and wedding celebrant.  Benjamin is fun and inspiring and just loves working with couples on their ceremony music and vows.  Challenge him to a new song!

All programmed out

Kids are coming? Add some fun puzzles inside the ceremony program to keep them amused.  Good idea for the adults too especially if they are waiting prior to the ceremony.  Don’t forget little pencils.  Have fun and make them coloured ones.

Don’t look!

Many couples are choosing a “first look” photo rather than waiting for the walk down the aisle.  This is a great way to ensure you capture that special moment when you see each other for the first time on your special day.

Confetti confusion

This has been changing for many years with brides choosing rose petals, lavender, glitter or even popcorn instead of traditional rice or confetti.  Consider setting up your own “tossing table” with personalised cones so guests can make their own mix.

Its thirsty work being a guest

Now this is not about getting your guests sloshed before the ceremony begins, but particularly for hot (or cold) days, consider your guests comfort and offer some light refreshment before the ceremony starts.

Aisle ettiquette

Nowadays, you will often see both parents walk their daughter down the aisle (rather than just the father of the bride), but many brides are now choosing a closer relative or friend (brother or mother only).  Handled sensitively, this could really make your day.

Church vs ??

Churches are still popular locations for ceremonies but if a bridal couple are not keen, there are many places from beaches, parks or back gardens which (with the correct permissions) can create an ambience that is more suited to you.

Resting weary legs

The seating and its arrangement at a wedding does not need to be the traditional two sides of an aisle.  Consider a circular plan, or a random wandering (particularly good if it is a rustic wedding and you are using hay bales or picnic rugs).  For short ceremonies, standing room only could also be an option.

Ring bearers and flower girls

No need to have one of each these days.  You could go with none, two of the same or even include a beloved pooch in the ceremony.

I vow and declare

Gone for a while now is the traditional “love, honour and obey”.  Make your own vows to suit you as a couple and feel free to add in some fun or quirky vows to reflect who you are as a couple.
