The Tweed Coast is blessed with a great range of cycle paths – as evidenced by this cycle path map prepared by the Tweed Coast Council. We’ve picked out our favourite routes and added some local information so that you can make a real day of your cycling adventure. Best part is that many of these cycle paths are off-road cycle paths making it perfect for a family day out – and for kids of all ages!
So, here are our favourites routes from our very own La Maison Pacifique
La Maison Pacifique to the Sheoak Shack Gallery, Fingal Head (approx 15kms)
A leisurely cycle from La Maison Pacifique, the coast cycle path is safe for all ages (from teenagers if the kids are on the own bicycles) and a great way to spend a day. We suggest you make the Sheoak Shack your lunch destination and enjoy the fabulous food on offer, whilst spending a some time viewing the artworks in the Gallery. A great place to visit all year round, but especially in summer where on Saturdays there is live music from 7pm (although that could be interesting cycling home after that – something we would not suggest!)
La Maison Pacifique to Kingscliff (approx 8 kms)
Kingscliff is one of our favourite towns and there are a plethora of options with everything from the Cudgen Headland Surf Club and Kingscliff Beach Bowls Club (both with incredible beachfront views) to the newly refurbished Kingscliff Beach Hotel (and their stunning new restaurant with amazing long bar) and our favourite cafe Mockingbird Cafe (live Music on weekends – check out their facebook page for details). You could even use Kingscliff as the half way point for your Fingal Head adventure!
La Maison Pacifique to Salt, Kingscliff (approx 5 kms)
Salt Village Kingscliff is another great destination for your northern trek, again with a wide range of cafe and dining options – including our favourite, Fins Restaurant (they have 16 different gin options and a wine list to die for). Don’t forget that there is a patrolled beach 365 days a year at Salt Village so pack your togs in the warmer weather and have a mid-ride dip as part of your day. The playground at the Village caters well for the young ones and there is a great open park perfect for the odd touch footy match (although having said that our garden at La Maison Pacifique is pretty good for that too!)
For the real adventurous, there are paths all the way to Byron Bay, but a 40km trek could be a little tough on the young ones. However, here are some shorter options.
La Maison Pacifique to Pottsville (approx 10 kms)
At the end of the main cycle path, Pottsville thrives as a small community town with some great cafes including our favourite, White Jade which has an open mic night Thursday nights, live music Friday nights and a monthly market on the first Saturday each month.
If you want to try a bakery, you can’t go past the Pottsville Bakehouse which has the most amazing array of breads, pastries, pies and pasties and is a spot we always visit when in town.
With the Pottsville Beach Markets on the first Sunday each month, there is a great opportunity not just to shop for some local fresh produce but grab some lunch at the community barbecue held each market day (can smell the frying onions now!)
La Maison Pacifique to Hastings Point (approx 6.5 kms)
Located on the mouth of Cudgen Creek, Hastings Point is a great picnic destination with shallow water near the mouth and a mecca for fishermen all year round. You can often find Kayaks for hire on the banks of the creek and the playground is a delight for all the young ones. There is a bait shop close by and the local Ripples Cafe offers theme nights most days of the week.
La Maison Pacifique to Cabarita Beach (approx 2 kms)
A hop, skip and a jump really and worth a walk or a cycle any time. We love our local Caba and places to eat include the Cafe Mod Barista (fabulous breakfasts – formerly the Blue Rose Cafe) the Stunned Mullet (fish and chips), Kartel Espresso Bar (with their fantastic home-made muffins and treats) and of course the Cabarita Surf Club. The new Woolworths Shopping complex offers a new range of cafes, take away and other specialty stores and Marty’s at Caba is probably the best bar on the coast for a range of live music playing most nights. The Caba Bakehouse has always been a firm favourite of ours although there are other options in town now. Caba retains it small town charm and is well worth a visit.
