Easter school holidays are well and truly over and are you getting ready to sort out your next holiday? We love travelling as a family and here are some great tips we have picked up along the way.
How long in each location?
Our favourite tip is (given time) spend 5-7 nights in each location you choose – packing and unpacking for 2-3 night stays means that you invariably spend most of your time doing just that and not enough time on relaxing!
So, we suggest choosing fewer locations, but branch out from each location to explore.
Trains, planes or automobiles?
Well, it all depends on your destination, but it is great fun to mix it up! Trains give the drivers a chance to relax and enjoy the scenery while planes enable people to get to a further afield destination fast. Automobiles are a great option when there is a group travelling, but make sure you have plenty of stops and activities to keep the kids amused.
So our tip? Mix it up.
Well, we are always going to suggest holiday homes (of course!) but not just because we love our La Maison Pacifique! For families of more than 2 adults and 2 children, hotel rooms can not only be squishy, (unless you have adjoining rooms), but also more expensive. There are many websites which offer great family accommodation – be it in holiday homes, apartments or family resorts. Choose something that really suits the group (ie. when we travel with our 3 children, a 3 bedroom apartment/home is a must, as is a washing machine and dryer!)
Of the kids – think about taking a photo of the kids prior to departure so if the worst happens, you have an up to date photo. Years ago, when our kids were small and we were on an extended overseas holiday in non-english speaking countries, we had the kids wear necklaces with a disc with our name and mobile phone number. Easy to do and it puts your mind at ease (and yes, we did lose 2 once – at a playground but luckily found them quickly!).
Also, younger kids are want to dart off on parents as something catches their eye – so a brightly coloured hat or top can help you find them in a crowd.
Of your bags – three things! Tip 1 – We recently travelled with LOTS of bags, so we put colour-coded ribbons for each person on their bags. That made each person responsible for their own bags and lessened the stress. Tip 2 – take a photo of the bags before you go. This will help with the recovery of lost bags and also a check to ensure you have them all when you retrieve them from the baggage carousel. Tip 3 – consider a Lugloc – great way to keep track of your luggage (although could be an expensive option with lots of bags)…
Low on the sugar, high on the activities. Uno if a favourite family game of ours and a deck of cards can keep older children amused for ages.
Colouring books are fun, and there are plenty of books and websites out there with activities for kids when travelling. Keep it simple (and inexpensive).
Think about packing..
We also like taking away travelling games (as whilst at La Maison Pacifique, we have many board games for families to enjoy, many places do not have the same facilities). Favourites of ours include scrabble, Uno and a deck of cards.
…and for your arrival
If you have taken our advice and booked a holiday house or apartment, check with the property owner/manager and see if you can get groceries delivered for your arrival. This is a great way to enable a smooth settling in and for the easy preparation of a snack/meal in your destination. It could be as easy as tea/milk/sugar/biscuits or a stock up ready for your week long stay!
