It has been a long time between drinks (so to speak) here at La Maison Pacifique – well between blogs anyway! However as I sit at my computer this morning I noticed a recent blog by Queensland.com about 10 things to do for your 30th birthday. Unashamedly Queensland-centric, I thought I could give it ago by matching their thoughts (with a few of my adjustments) with local things to do in our Kingscliff/Casuarina/Byron Bay region! So here goes. Hope you like my choices…
Learn about wine
There are a couple of ways to do this. You can visit local wineries or you can do like the locals and visit Emmanuel’s Wine Shop in Kingscliff. With over 1,000 wines in stock and free wine tasting with nibbles every Friday night from 5.30pm-7.00pm, there is no better place to learn about wine. Their selection is world-wide and don’t forget to ask about their old wines which can be sourced.
Learn about beer
Many locals talk about the Byron Bay Brewery – just 30 minutes from La Maison Pacifique in Byron Bay – with their selection of craft beers with everything from their “Hazy One” – Cloudy pale lager to their “Dark One” dark lager. However many of the local pubs (try Salt Bar Kingscliff) do offer a range of local beers, including the very popular Stone and Wood. They have their own breweries in both Byron Bay and Murwillumbah and conduct tours daily (for $20.00 per person) at their Byron Bay brewery.
Learn about cocktails
(I am sensing a theme here…). Salt Bar Kingscliff loves serving up their range of cocktails, although my pick would have to be The Spice Den at the Santai Resort. Dark and moody, it is the perfect place to feel relaxed and their Thai menu is one to die for.
Further north is the Kingscliff Beach Hotel has a fantastic vibe – it is not only located with direct views to the beach, but has a fantastic stage from which local bands regularly perform. Nothing better than a Sunday arvie spent in this newly refurbished local.
Book a degustation
I do have a favourite here – Season Restaurant with its Season Tasting Menu would be my pick for a local degustation experience but I certainly would not discount the menu at Paper Daisy at Halcyon House. Both have a focus on sourcing fresh, local ingredients and I would certainly recommend.
Book a luxury holiday retreat
Well we will admit to being a little biased here, but can you imagine a lovely, peaceful holiday away where you have the full run of a beautiful home, with designer finishes and your own pool and spa? Right on the beachfront, La Maison Pacifique is the ideal choice for a relaxing getaway.
Take a surf lesson with a local
In2Surf is our favourite local surf school with sessions run at Kingscliff, Cabarita Beach and Hastings Point. Our second choice would be the Watersports Guru who (in addition) offer kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkel with turtles, whale watching (season is April to November each year) and kids activities. Whichever you choose, you are in for a great time!
Hit the open road
Once at La Maison Pacifique, there are a plethora of driving day tours that you can embark on. We love trips up to the markets at Murwillumbah on a Sunday, but we would also highly recommend a visit to the Margaret Olley Art Centre which includes a recreation of her art studio from Paddington in Sydney.
Great walks around Kingscliff
Where do we start? From simple walks around Kingscliff, a short walk around the world-famous Cape Byron Lighthouse to stunning walks through the Springbrook National Park or the vistas from the treetops at O’Reillys there is almost too much to choose from! Our favourite walk would have to be from La Maison Pacifique – a 30 minute walk south along the beach to Cabarita Beach or head north and in an hour you can be at Salt Village. Choose the beach walk or the board walk and you will relax and get your exercise all in one!
Hit the trails in your 4 x 4
There are a number of local tracks ranging from 2 to 100km long and from easy to moderate in complexity. 4 x 4 Earth have them listed on their website to check out what would be most suitable for you (and your vehicle) and have a go at this fun activity.
Jump out of a plane
Not for the faint-hearted but this is certainly one to tick off your bucket list! Skydive Byron Bay are the local experts, promising “you’ll drop from an extreme altitude of up to 14,000ft and freefall at over 200 km/hr for up to an insane 60 seconds, then float under canopy over Byron Bay for 5-7 minutes soaking up spectacular beach and hinterland views all the way to Brisbane, the Gold Coast and beyond”. This could be you!
We do hope we have inspired you to try some things to do for your 30th birthday and encourage you that the Northern Rivers/Tweed Coast area of NSW is the perfect location for your adventures or a holiday – be it you are a local or visiting from afar…
….Your Casuarina NSW holiday could be your best ever at any time of the year. All you have to do now is book! Northern Rivers area NSW (including Kingscliff, Casuarina, Pottsville and Cabarita Beach) is the perfect spot – and its location is ideal – 1/2 way between the Gold Coast and Byron Bay. Patrolled beaches line the coast. We even have Carla, Lisa, Pete and Spida’s top tips on things to do in Kingscliff. You can even book a picnic or high tea with Teaspoon High Tea Events. Check out our blog and news, location and attractions and what’s on and markets for more great tips and things to do on your Northern Rivers holidays.
